What are the Signs of Dry Socket after an Extraction?

Book Appointment

Identifying the signs of a dry socket (alveolar osteitis) is essential for timely treatment, as this condition typically occurs three to five days after an extraction when a protective blood clot is lost.

Key signs and symptoms include:

  • Severe, throbbing pain: This pain often worsens suddenly after an initial period of improvement. It may radiate from the extraction site to your ear, eye, temple, or neck on the same side of your face.
  • Visible white bone: The socket may appear empty, with the underlying white bone visible where a dark red blood clot should be.
  • Unpleasant taste or odor: You may experience persistent bad breath or a distinctly unpleasant taste in your mouth that does not go away with gentle rinsing.

If you experience sharp, escalating pain that is not controlled by over-the-counter medication, or if you notice these physical changes in the socket, you should contact your dental team immediately for professional care, which may include cleaning the site and applying a medicated dressing.
