How Long does the Palatal Expansion Process Typically Take?

Book Appointment

The duration of the palatal expansion process depends primarily on the age of the patient and the complexity of the correction needed. At our New Westminster clinic, we tailor each treatment plan to ensure effective results and patient comfort.

For most patients, the typical timelines are as follows:

  • Children (ages 6–10): The process generally takes 6 to 12 months. This includes both the active expansion phase and the retention period where the appliance remains in place to stabilize the new jaw width.
  • Adults (ages 18+): Because the palatal suture has usually fused in adulthood, the process often requires surgical assistance (such as SARPE). For these cases, treatment typically lasts between 12 to 18 months.

We utilize modern technology, including digital scanning for custom-fitted devices, to make the journey as efficient as possible. Throughout the process, we provide a judgement free space where we focus on education and personalized care. If you are ready to see how we can help you or your child achieve a healthier smile, feel free to Book Appointment with us today.
