Palatal expansion is most effective for children between the ages of 6 and 10 years old. During this window, the palatal suture has not yet fused, allowing us to gently widen the upper jaw with a traditional palate expander (like a Hyrax) to achieve optimal results with high effectiveness and minimal discomfort.
While we treat patients of all ages, early intervention is key for the following reasons:
- Jaw Growth Guidance: The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first evaluation by age 7. This allows us to detect narrow jaw issues early and guide growth to improve facial harmony.
- Crossbite Correction: Early treatment effectively corrects crossbites, which helps prevent uneven tooth wear and reduces the risk of future jaw pain or TMJ disorders.
- Creating Space: Widening the palate early creates necessary room for permanent teeth, which can often reduce the need for tooth extractions later in life.
In our judgement free space, we use modern technology like digital scanning to create custom-fitted devices for our younger patients. If you are in the New Westminster or Lower Mainland area and want to explore options for your child, please Book Appointment to visit our upgraded clinic.
